 From its native name, Maynilad derived from two Tagalog words may (there is) and nilad (a variety of waterlily that once abound the bay and Pasig river), Manila had been a commercial center for centuries when the Spaniard Legazpi first heard reports of it while in the Visayas. In 1571, Legazpi declared Manila capital of the Philippines.
